RE: First workamping job - is this usual?

When I ran the numbers, the nightly fee for this resort is over $60. I would never pay that anywhere. We are paying less than $18. a night and getting a wage and bonus. It all comes down to considering we will be back closer to family for a few months. We will be in an area with lots to do for the days we will have our granddaughter who turns 3 by then with us. I especially like that this campground has a full time cleaning crew so that will not be on any list of chores. Only camp store, registration and participating in special events.
As I said, this will be our first experience. We will give it a try to see if it is for us in the future.
Thanks for all replies.

RE: First workamping job - is this usual?

As we go along, we no doubt will be volunteering. We plan on getting involved with NOMADS, the United Methodist group who do volunteer work as RVers whose only pay is a site.
That will be after Len turns 62 and will be eligible for SS in 2011.
No offense taken! Lots of options!! Thanks.

RE: First workamping job - is this usual?

Thanks for the input. However, we are really not looking to work more than 3-4 days a week and then is only a few months a year.
I will be on SS starting in January having reached 65 this month, OUCH! Hubby turns 60 in January and will have a small pension from the State after only 10 years employment in Dept of Corrections. We have enough invested (even though we are down almost 100k right now) to be able to draw some funds each month until he is old enough for SS. After that point, we should be fine with just his pension and us both on SS.
We think of working back near my family for the summer as a bonus along with not having to draw down investments during those months.
This being our first WK job, I was just wondering how other campgrounds paid.
Thanks.

RE: First workamping job - is this usual?

To answer a few questions, this is our first wk job. As tomimc said, we need to get our feet wet and get references. One thing - the campground has over 800 sites and is at the Jersey shore so their fees are quite high. They have a full time cleaning and maintenance crew - so no cleaning THANK HEAVENS!
Also, we start fulltiming in February and will head southwest for a few months. This will bring us back into our current home area for a few months this summer to see our grandchildren, my daughters and my mother who is 83.
I am not at all thrilled working for what is in effect $6.50 but when considering everything it is tempting. I guess I am really wondering what is the usual deal once we get some experience workamping.
Thanks again.

First workamping job - is this usual?

Hubby and I have been offered our first WK jobs this summer. We will only commit to 3 months. Here is the deal - $8.50 an hour each for 32 hours each a week. Can work up to 40 if we want. From our $8.50 we each have a deduction of $2.00 an hour until we have paid $1,600 for the FHU site. That means at 32 hours each per week it will take 12.5 weeks before it is paid.
We get a minimum of $300. each as a bonus for completing the full 3 months. We have to pay our own electric which costs approximately $100 a month. We figure one of our bonsus will pay for the electric. 10% discount at their store (big deal!) No other benefits. So we figure we will end up with approximately $4,000 clear for the 14 weeks we will be there.
Thoughts anyone?

RE: Hitch conversions, good or bad?

We had a GN because we also pulled horse trailers. Once we sold the horses and trailer, went to a Fifth wheel hitch. Never had problem with GN, but for sure the standard hitch feels more secure. Way less sway. And lots easier to hitch up.

RE: Unbreakable Dinnerware

Ah yes - Melmac. That was SOOOO popular back in the late 50's, early 60's. I remember a friend of my mothers. She got a phone call that visitors were coming. No dish washer back then so into the oven went to Melmac. You guessed it - next day she forgot. There went the Melmac AND the oven.

RE: Economy Downturn

We are in processing of selling to daughter. She will be renting out her condo for a few years. What concerns me is our lost of funds. I realize our $110k loss is just on paper but today I heard it could take 25 years to gain back what we lost and it is recommended people about to retire should continue to work a few more years. So now we have but about 50% of what we had a few short months ago. At 65 I might not have 25 years! And I am due to retire 1/30/09. Still, fulltiming will be cheaper than living in the house. AND I don't want to continue to work.

RE: What are the "must see" places on the way to Grand Canyon?

I second all thoses places BRUGG stated near Flagstaff. A lot of them are in the National Park system. If you are over 62 be sure to get your Golden Age Pass. $10.00 for the rest of your life! If not over 62 get a one year pass - I think it is $80.00. You will save a bundle of money if you will be going to National Park areas. WHAT A BARGAIN!

RE: What type of rig?

We will start FTing in February in a 36" Cedar Creek with three slides. I required 5 items - got em! 1. Free standing table and chairs. 2. Overhead fan 3. Electric fireplace 4. Large window in back with two recliners and 5. Computer desk area.
Everyone has their own requirements. What were yours?

RE: My wife and I are not nieve....

Thanks avan - I know once we set out I will be fine. However, right now my heart is breaking just thinking about it. Gosh - when my daughters were teenagers I would have had no problem leaving them behind! LOL!. Somehow it is different with grandchildren.

RE: My wife and I are not nieve....

We decided over two years ago to fulltime in 2/09. Well, time seemed to drag by. Now that we have only three months left it is flying.
What we really didn't expect at the time was my daughter who had been married 10 years would give us a beautiful grandaughter two days after she turned 40. They live two hours from us but we get her for weekend a couple of times a months.
This is the hardest thing possible - leaving that beautiful child for months and months at a time. We just took her home. I don't really know if I would have made these plans had we known.
But, we are still going ahead with our plans as my husband has 10 grandchildren in Tx and La. He needs to see them more often too. Not to mention, once retired we can not afford this house and travel as we want. I will cope.

RE: GPS feature that you would recommend

We like our Sony. 4.5" screen, voice directions including name of the street. As it is our first, nothing to compare it to. We are still figuring out all it can do. Got on sale at Radio Shack for $250.

pantry ideas

We have a 2002 Cedar Creek 36RLTS. It has one of those narrow pantry's with a slide out rack and wire baskets hanging on each side. These wire baskets are quite narrow holding nothing wider than a regular size can. It seems to me this setup wastes an awful lot of space.
Any suggestions of how to reconfigure to allow more storage capabilties?
